  • Define the lower jaw line
  • Support the back of the jawline to create a structured and balanced appearance
  • Address marionette lines

Volumising Products For Jawline Contouring

Volumising products are gel-based substances made from synthetic complex sugars. There are numerous types of volumising products that differ in cross-linking, thickness and longevity. Volumising products are prescription-only and therefore, require a formal consultation with one of our prescribing doctors.

During the consultation, the doctor will assess the patient and discuss a treatment plan before issuing a prescription for the product that aligns with the agreed approach. The treatment is then carried out by one of our cosmetic nurses who will follow the doctor’s prescription and treatment plan.

Product Categories

Thin products

Provide subtle change; may spread slightly beyond the treated area.

Medium products

Thicker, longer-lasting; spread depends on tissue characteristics and previous treatments.

Semipermanent products

Firmer, highly controlled placement that is intended to remain stable for up to 18 to 24 months. However, a review at around 12 to 18 months is often preferred.

The longevity of the treatment depends not only on the product used but on individual factors, including anatomy, movement, vascularity, metabolism, lifestyle and prior treatments.

Consultation & Treatment Planning

Before commencing treatment, all patients must have a face-to-face consultation. This will include:

  • a detailed assessment of the lower face and jawline
  • a review of medical and treatment history
  • a discussion of treatment suitability, options and considerations
  • development of an individualised plan that may involve staged treatments or combination approaches, depending on anatomy and previous treatments.

Treatment Approach

Jawline Contouring treatment is performed with careful assessment of the lower face. The placement of the product is staged to ensure a controlled and measured outcome. This approach is designed to provide a more defined jawline in both the front and back regions.

Forearm Prick Test

If patients are to receive products containing synthetic complex sugars, we may recommend a forearm prick test. This involves introducing a small amount of a dissolving agent to the forearm, then observing the area to check for a localised reaction.

This precaution helps minimise the risk of severe allergic response, including anaphylaxis, in both planned treatments and urgent situations such as vascular compromise. If an individual has had prior exposure to such products without reaction, we may consider the test unnecessary, although it may still be recommended as a precaution.

Imaging Assessment

If patients have had previous volumising treatments, they may require additional assessment before further treatment. This may involve imaging, such as an MRI or ultrasound, to evaluate:

  • tissue characteristics, fibrosis or scarring
  • residual product placement and distribution
  • fluid retention or other soft tissue changes

These assessments support informed planning and patient safety.

Comfort Measures

Your comfort remains a priority throughout your treatment. Measures may include:

cooling methods such as ice packs
topical anaesthetic applied before treatment
the use of products containing a local anaesthetic

Throughout the treatment, your cosmetic nurse will monitor your response and maintain communication to ensure the procedure is performed in a controlled manner.

After-Care & Recovery

Patients will receive written and verbal after-care instructions following their procedure. They will also receive a record of areas treated and products used.

Following the procedure, typical responses include redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising, which are usually most noticeable during the first 24 to 48 hours. Swelling begins to reduce by days three to four and the most visible effects settle within approximately one week. However, individual healing times can vary.

Cost

The cost of your procedure will depend on your jawline anatomy, the product selection and volume required and whether a staged or combination approach is recommended. Following your consultation, you’ll be given a personalised treatment plan with all associated costs.

Risks & Complications

All cosmetic procedures, including Jawline Contouring treatments, carry risks and outcomes vary from person to person. Potential side effects include bruising, swelling, product migration, infection, vascular compromise and changes in facial movement. Rare but serious complications include visual disturbances or vascular events.

Risks and complications are discussed in detail during your consultation and ongoing monitoring and follow-up form part of the treatment process. For more information, please see our Potential Risks and Complications page.
