Breast Implant Replacement surgery involves removing existing implants and replacing them with new ones to maintain or address breast shape, size, or address implant-related concerns.
It may be recommended due to implant rupture, capsular contracture, changes in breast shape, ageing implants, or a personal desire to change size or type of implant.
There is no fixed expiry date for implants. However, they are not considered lifetime devices and may need replacement if complications arise or over time due to natural changes in the body.
The old implants are removed through an incision, and new implants are placed. In some cases, the implant pocket is adjusted or scar tissue (capsule) is removed.
A Breast Lift may be recommended if there is sagging or stretched skin, particularly after implant removal or long-term changes to breast tissue.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in a hospital or accredited surgical facility.
Recovery typically involves swelling, bruising and discomfort for the first few weeks. Most people return to light activities within one to two weeks, with full recovery over several weeks.
Surgeons often use existing scars where possible. However, in some cases, a new incision may be required depending on surgical needs and previous scar placement.
