What is Breast Augmentation?

One of Australia’s most-requested aesthetic surgery procedures, Breast Augmentation is often performed to:

  • Increase volume, fullness and projection
  • Increase breast volume following pregnancy, weight loss or ageing
  • Can be combined with a more extensive Breast Lift BAM surgery (Breast Augmentation Mastopexy) to also address breast ptosis, or breast droop.
  • BAM can also be combined to address other issues at the same time such as inverted nipples

Round v tear drop breast implants: what’s the difference?

Round implants are often considered when:

  • The concern is primarily about size and fullness
  • Individuals are seeking uniform volume
  • There is a desire for increased upper breast volume
  • There is very mild ptosis (sagging)
  • There is small, minimal pre-existing breast volume
  • There is well-defined breast shape

Tear drop implants are often considered when

  • Individuals want to emulate natural breast curvature
  • There is a decent amount of natural breast tissue
  • Individuals seek increased lower breast volume
  • There is mild ptosis or sagging
  • Inverted nipple surgery or misshapen breasts also need to be addressed

The Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is generally performed as a day procedure at Kingsgrove Day Hospital under general anaesthetic.

How important is cup size and ccs really?

  • Although this is one of our most asked questions, cup size is unreliable for surgical planning because it doesn’t necessarily correlate to implant volume or breast size.
  • In fact, cup size is based solely on a bra-fitting size – technically the difference between the measurement under the bust and across the fullest part of the breast.

Furthermore, cup sizing changes markedly depend on what part of the world you live in and varies markedly between brands.

  • Similarly, CCs (cubic centimetres), the measure used for the volume of implants, is not the be all and end all when it comes to making informed implant decisions.

It’s also critical to weigh up other factors that impact final breast and cleavage outcomes.

  • Firstly, Dr Dona will determine the ‘breast footprint’ or the diameter of chest wall to the underarm, to ascertain which sized implant is required to occupy that space.
  • After that Dr Dona will discuss the implant profile (high-sitting, medium or low), implant projection (a direct measurement of cm outwards).
  • Finally, he will discuss the suitability of round or anatomical (teardrop) shaped implants as well as smooth or textured implants.
  • This video with Dr Dona on Instagram explains why letting go of ‘cup size’ thinking leads to more realistic expectations.
