Non-Surgical Vaginal Augmentation involves administering a gel-like volumising substance into the labia majora. This substance is synthetically derived from complex sugars naturally present in the body’s tissues. It is manufactured specifically for aesthetic use and is classified as a prescription-only medication.

The Treatment

Before treatment, the area is numbed with a local anaesthetic. Then, a small entry point is created on each side of the upper labia. A cannula is used to inject the volumising product into the labia majora. The cannula slowly advances along the length of the labia, distributing the product throughout the tissue layers.

To help with comfort, the volumising product contains a local anaesthetic that numbs the treated area as the treatment progresses. The treatment takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

This procedure typically requires a medium-density volumising product. These products have a thicker consistency compared with lighter formulations used in more superficial areas.

Tissue characteristics, individual anatomy and treatment objectives determine the selection of volumising product used. Results vary between individuals, with the product lasting approximately 18 to 24 months, depending on the product chosen and individual factors.

Your Comfort During Treatment

Non-surgical labia augmentation is usually well tolerated. To support optimal comfort during your treatment, we’ll apply a small amount of topical anaesthetic to the treatment area. In most cases, this is sufficient to provide comfort throughout the treatment.

NB: As mentioned earlier, the volumising product contains a local anaesthetic that numbs the treated area during treatment.

Usually, no other anaesthetic is required. However, if needed, we can use additional anaesthetic options. Your treating cosmetic nurse will discuss this with you before your procedure.

What to Expect After Treatment

Immediately following treatment, it’s usual to notice bruising and swelling in the treated area. It’s also normal to notice redness, tenderness, itching, tightness and firmness within the tissue and small puncture marks where the cannula has been placed.

Healing in this area varies between individuals and the final appearance is best assessed after four weeks, once the tissues have had time to settle.

Patients should be aware that, when volumising products are used, more than one session may be required to achieve the intended outcome. If staging treatments is recommended, this will be discussed as part of your treatment plan during your consultation.

After-Care

You’ll be given verbal and written after-care instructions during your appointment.

To help minimise swelling or bruising, apply a cold compress to the area for around 15 minutes, intermittently during the first 24 to 48 hours if required.

It may also be helpful to rest with your hips and pelvic area slightly elevated.

Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, excessive heat exposure, or any activity that increases blood pressure for the first 24 hours.

Avoid touching or massaging the treated area.

Avoid waxing, IPL, laser or other treatments in the area for approximately two weeks.

Post-Treatment Follow-Up

We encourage patients to photograph their treated area and then SMS the clinic an image a few hours after treatment so we can confirm the area is settling as expected. As this is a sensitive area, however, some patients may prefer to remain nearby for a short while after treatment, then return to the clinic for a quick review if required.

Early review of this area is recommended, as, although uncommon, complications such as vascular compromise may not always be detected immediately after treatment. By assessing the area shortly afterwards, we improve our chances of identifying any early changes.

We usually schedule a follow-up appointment three to four days after your procedure to review the treated area.

You’ll be provided with after-hours contact details, so if any concerns arise, we can manage them appropriately.

Cost

The cost of non-surgical vaginal augmentation can vary depending on the complexity of the treatment and the amount of product required. The procedure often involves larger volumes of product (compared to facial rejuvenation), typically starting from around 10 mL. Therefore, the overall cost will reflect the larger quantity required. To determine this cost, you must book a face-to-face consultation.

New Patient Consultation

All patients require an in-person consultation before treatment. During this time, you’ll be assessed by your treating nurse, who will review your medical history, relevant clinical considerations and your treatment goals. They will also discuss potential risks and complications, along with strategies to minimise risk and the management approach if a complication occurs.

As this product is a prescription-only medication, you will also require a consultation with one of our prescribing doctors. This appointment is conducted via telehealth or in person and forms part of our necessary scripting process required before treatment.

During your consultation, your prescribing doctor will:

  • assess whether the treatment is appropriate for you
  • review your medical history
  • discuss your proposed treatment plan
  • outline potential risks and complications
  • explain management pathways if an adverse event occurs
  • give you time to ask any questions before proceeding

This consultation supports the informed consent process, ensuring you receive relevant information about the proposed treatment before deciding whether to proceed.

Potential Side-Effects

All cosmetic procedures carry risks. Although most individuals do not experience complications, side effects can occur and should be considered before proceeding with treatment.

Common reactions after treatment may include redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, firmness within the tissue, itching, temporary asymmetry and small puncture marks at the entry points.

Less frequently, complications such as nodules, infection, skin discolouration or local hypersensitivity may occur.

Although uncommon, more serious complications associated with hyaluronic acid products have been reported in medical literature. These include disruption to blood flow (vascular compromise), neurological events, tissue injury and in extremely rare cases, visual disturbance or blindness.

All risks will be discussed with you during your consultation with both your prescribing doctor and your cosmetic nurse before your procedure, so that you can make an informed decision.
