What is Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia refers to the development of excess breast tissue in males. The condition can develop at any stage of life, but it most commonly develops during puberty due to changes in hormones, and it can often persist into adulthood. This overdevelopment of glandular tissue can lead to an unwanted chest appearance. The condition can develop as a result of:
- Genetics
- Age
- Hormones
- Weight gain
- Certain medications
- Liver problems
To address the condition, gynaecomastia surgery is becoming an increasingly popular treatment. The surgery aims to reduce the amount of excess tissue in the breast area and help recontour the chest. Dr Starr will tailor his approach to your individual needs, body proportions, and goals
What can gynaecomastia surgery achieve?
Gynaecomastia surgery, also called gynaecomastia correction, is an aesthetic surgical procedure. It aims to reduce the overdeveloped glandular tissue to readjust the shape and appearance of the chest. While treatment is not generally required for health reasons, many men may seek the procedure for cosmetic purposes.
Gynaecomastia can sometimes be treated with non-surgical methods such as changes in medications or lifestyle. However, for some men, surgical intervention may be a good option. The procedure reduces the amount of fat tissue in the chest via either surgical excision or liposuction.
Am I a suitable candidate?
Before undergoing surgery, it is important to speak with a qualified surgeon to ensure you are a good candidate. Dr Starr will speak to you about your medical history and goals for surgery to determine if this is the right treatment approach for your case.
Generally, the surgery is suited to men who have an overgrowth of glandular tissue in the breasts due to gynaecomastia. While correction surgery is not a requirement for people with the condition, some men may wish to reduce their breast tissue. Good candidates are also physically and mentally healthy, at a healthy weight, and do not smoke. If this sounds like you, correction surgery may be a good option.
Consultation with Dr Matt Starr
During your consultation with Dr Starr, you will have the opportunity to discuss your condition, possible causes, and which treatment options would suit you. You will be able to express your concerns about your breast tissue and what outcomes you hope to achieve from gynaecomastia surgery. Once we have the necessary information, we will be able to start outlining a surgical plan. You are welcome to ask any questions about your procedure so that you feel comfortable making a decision about whether to go ahead with the surgery.
After this appointment, you should have a clear understanding of the surgery and adequate knowledge of what to expect during recovery.
The procedure
Since each patient has different requirements, the techniques used during gynaecomastia surgery can vary. In general, it involves either liposuction or surgical excision of fat tissue, or a combination of both. You can expect the surgery to take around two hours, depending on the complexity.
Surgical Excision
During a typical surgery, your surgeon will administer anaesthesia and make the required incisions, usually around the areolas. The excess glandular tissue and skin will then be removed from the area. Once enough tissue has been removed, your surgeon will close the incisions, securing the nipples in position.
Liposuction
If liposuction is used, the surgeon will insert thin cannulas into the skin, which will suction the fat from the body. The goal is to reduce the amount of unwanted fat tissue from the chest. This is done in alignment with your desired goals, which you will have discussed prior with Dr Starr.
Maintaining a stable weight and a healthy overall lifestyle will help you maintain the results of your surgery.
Recovery & aftercare
After your gynaecomastia surgery, you may have some swelling and sensitivity in your incision areas, which should subside gradually throughout the healing process. Dr Starr will ensure pain management is factored into your treatment plan. Patients can usually go home on the day of their surgery, but they should have someone else drive them home.
At-home recovery is different for every patient, depending on their health, lifestyle, and the nature of their surgery. Your surgeon will give you personalised advice about how to care for your incision areas. You should make sure to follow these instructions. For example, you may need to:
- Wear a compression garment for several weeks
- Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated
- Maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water
- Refrain from smoking, as this can increase risks
- Avoid strenuous activities and exercise for six weeks
- Consult your surgeon if any issues arise
Following these instructions will aid the healing process and help prevent the reformation of excess breast tissue.
What are the risks associated with gynaecomastia surgery?
Since every surgical procedure comes with risks, it is important to do your research beforehand in order to be fully aware. We will discuss the potential complications of gynecomastia correction with you before your procedure, which will help you make an educated decision. The risks can include:
- Reactions to anaesthesia
- Ongoing pain and swelling
- Damage to underlying tissues
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Asymmetry
- Unwanted outcomes
- Poor healing
- Visible scars
For some patients, there can also be a risk of reoccurrence. Generally, gynecomastia can be a recurring condition if it is caused by medications or hormonal issues as opposed to weight gain. For this reason, it is important to discuss your condition with a professional before undergoing treatment. Dr Starr will endeavour to recommend a suitable treatment for your body type and condition.
