Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a procedure aimed at reshaping the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat deposits. Individuals often find this a common area of concern as weight loss, natural ageing, genetics, and medical conditions can contribute to excess skin on the upper arms, which cannot be removed through a healthy diet and regular exercise.
A brachioplasty procedure will remove an amount of skin on the upper arm and adjust the underlying supportive tissue. Excess skin is removed via excision, and if any fat deposits are present, liposuction may also be used. We recommend that Brachioplasty patients have reached their goal maintainable weight before proceeding with this surgery, as future significant weight gain may partially reverse or impact the outcome. Patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the results, although natural ageing and genetics will continue to affect the results over time. This means it’s important to have realistic expectations.
How long the procedure takes and whether a hospital stay is required will depend on the extent of the surgery. Recovery is extensive, as patients will have restricted movement and need several weeks off work to facilitate healing. Patients should also understand that there will be scarring on the inside of their upper arm, running from their armpit to their elbow. Plastic surgeon Dr Matt Starr will work with you both before and after your surgery help you understand what to expect during surgery and the possible risks involved.
