**Results may vary from person to person**
For many people both young and old, the appearance of their neck is a great concern. To tackle this head on, there are a range of procedures to improve the appearance of the neck. However, it is important to analyse the problem first before deciding on the type of surgery. Certain neck lift surgeries solve specific problems and in some cases a combination procedure is required to achieve maximum benefits.
Double Chin - Sub-mental Liposculpture
Double chins are often a problem for younger patients who, despite a healthy diet and regular exercise, have some excess rounding in the area under the chin. Having a relatively small amount of fat removed via Liposuction can make all the difference. Tiny incisions just under the chin and behind the ears are used to insert the slim suction probes. It is a day procedure and is done either under local anaesthetic or twilight sedation. There will be some swelling and bruising, but pain is not normally significant. You will be required to wear a support dressing for up to a week and after 1-2 weeks once swelling and bruising go down, and a likely dramatic change will be evident.
Neck banding - Platysma tightening [Plication]
There is a thin sheet of muscle under the skin of the neck called the Platysma and as we age, the left and right sides tend to separate in the middle and lose tone. This issue is more noticeable in thinner patients and can be corrected through Platysma tightening. The free edges of the muscle are stitched together to tighten them so the banding is reduced or eliminated. The incision is about three centimetres long and is hidden under the chin. As a day case, this procedure may be completed under twilight sedation, however patients with excess skin may need to combine this with an ‘S-Lift’ or face lift. Recovery is similar to sub-mental Liposculture.
Heavy sagging neck - Neck Lift
For patients with a combination of excess neck fat, Platysma banding and sagging skin, a neck lift is the recommended treatment option. It involves a minimal incision in front of the earlobe in the natural crease and behind the ear into the hair in the same fashion as a face lift. It is a more significant procedure and therefore takes longer to perform and heal, so most patients elect to have general anaesthetic and stay overnight in hospital. There may be small drains that will need to be removed the next day and a compression dressing needs to be worn for 1-2 weeks.
Small Chin - Chin Implant
For patients who complain of excess tissue under the chin, the problem may be the chin is too small. Removing tissue will not give the facial harmony and proportion desired, but a chin implant will address this for most patients by tightening the skin under the chin. It is a day case and some skin coloured tape is left on the chin for approximately 10 days to help control swelling.
I’m interested, what’s the next step?
Your first step is an initial consultation with the doctor who will be performing the procedure. If you have a GP referral you will be able to claim some of the cost of the consultation from Medicare. If the doctor decides you are a suitable candidate for a neck lift and you want to go ahead, a booking for the procedure will be scheduled.
You may wish to speak with our Nurse Consultant prior to seeing the doctor. During this complimentary consultation at our Perth location, the Nurse Consultant can discuss the procedure and provide you with written information.
